Lows Regular model is slower than rivals, brake pedal is as soft as Charmin, where are all the modern driver assists? Verdict The DBX has unique traits not found on other Astons—or most other SUVs, for that matter. Overview For those who covet an Aston Martin and can afford a six-figure SUV, the 2024 DBX checks both boxes. While its larger footprint and extra mass mean it's not nearly as satisfying to drive as the British brand's sports cars, the DBX offers things none of them do, such as an inhabitable back seat and towing ability. It has considerably more cargo space than the DBS or Vantage too. Of course, the high-riding Aston still delivers high performance thanks to its rowdy twin-turbo V-8, which makes either 542 or 697 horsepower. The higher figure applies to the sport-tuned DBX 707, which races to 60 mph in an impressive 3.1 seconds. Still, there are quicker alternatives that cost less, and the ultra-lux SUV should have more modern safety tech than it does. At least its richly appointed cabin and countless customizable options help its desirability, and there aren't many other SUVs that are as handsome as the 2024 Aston Martin DBX. What's New for 2024? The DBX lineup carries over unchanged for the 2024 model year. Pricing and Which One to Buy DBX: $200,086 DBX 707: $245,086 Aston Martin provides an impressive number of personalization options for the DBX, especially through its Q customization service. The company's online configurator shows several different appearance packages. We're partial to the standard DBX with the Accelerate interior theme, with its mix of leather and faux suede and the Sports Plus seats. On the outside, we'd choose the pretty Minotaur Green paint as well as the 22-inch black-and-bronze Ribbon wheels. We'd also opt for the tow package, the power tailgate, and the Sports Exhaust system that lets us better enjoy the engine's music. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The regular DBX is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine supplied by Mercedes-AMG. The engine makes 542 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque and pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission, also supplied by Mercedes. The DBX 707 features a revised version of the AMG powertrain that generates 697 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. Its nine-speed automatic uses a wet-clutch pack instead of the torque converter used by the standard transmission. While the DBX is fundamentally rear-wheel drive, a center transfer case sends torque to the front axle when slippage is detected at the rear. It also has a limited-slip rear differential and can tow up to 5940 pounds. Adaptive dampers and height-adjustable air springs come standard on the Aston—a boon for off-road adventuring. The DBX we tested rushed to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, which is respectable for a hot SUV, but the Lamborghini Urus and other rivals are notably quicker. The DBX 707 was much quicker and hit 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. The version we drove on England's best roads showcased the engine's lusty soundtrack and the transmission's unobtrusive operation. Thanks to a diverse set of drive modes, its chassis demonstrated a broad range of demeanors, from refined and relaxed to responsive and playful. Despite its short 157-foot stop from 70 mph, the ute suffered from an unresponsive brake pedal. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The DBX shares a lot of its switchgear with the rest of the Aston Martin family. The cabin is covered in attractively stitched leather, soft-touch surfaces, and a microsuede headliner. The ute comes standard with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, customizable ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, and heated front and rear seats. Desirable options include ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a variety of even fancier cabin materials. Rear-seat space is ample, with plenty of knee and headroom for adults. Thanks: MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE CARS 🤍 🤍 Tested: 2023 Aston Martin DBX 707 Is More Than Just a Pretty Face The 707 treatment brings a heady 3.1-second 60-mph time to Aston Martin's fetching DBX SUV. Sports-car companies creating SUVs is a phenomenon enthusiasts have watched with varying degrees of horror, excitement, and acceptance ever since the Porsche Cayenne debuted. With its DBX, Aston Martin arguably—and, well, surprisingly—has been the most successful in transferring the design language of its sports cars onto an SUV shape. The brand, however, has also come to realize that the waning days of internal combustion are no time to hold back when it comes to horsepower. So, whereas the standard DBX develops 542 horsepower from its AMG-supplied twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, the new DBX 707 model produces 697 horsepower—or 707 PS in the more flattering European measure. The design of this high-test version, of course, has been tweaked, mostly for reasons of function. The 707's grille opening is 27 percent larger to permit greater airflow for engine cooling. Flanking it are revised air intakes bisected by horizontal DRL lighting elements. There are several new aero bits: a carbon-fiber front splitter, revised skirts along the rocker panels, air deflectors ahead of the front and rear wheel openings, an air outlet cut into the rear quarter panels, an extended rear diffuser, and a longer rear spoiler. The mirror caps and side strakes can be done in carbon fiber or black to match the window surrounds, hood vents, and roof rails. Fortunately, none of these addenda detract too much from the organic shape of the DBX—although we're not particular fans of the rear air outlets and that protruding diffuser. Still, this is a long way from Mansory-style aftermarket overkill. The uprated power output comes from the same 4.0-liter V-8 as the standard DBX. Of course, the engine isn't exactly the same: There are new turbochargers, redesigned induction and exhaust systems, and a reprogrammed engine control unit to manage it all. The massaging was done at Aston Martin under head of powertrain engineering Ralph Illenberger, who, having come from AMG, knows this engine well. To cope with the extra output, the standard DBX's nine-speed automatic transmission is replaced by an AMG-sourced version that features a wet clutch pack in place of a torque converter. HIGHS: Hold-on-tight acceleration, leather-lined cabin is an olfactory delight, sleek looks show up other SUVs. In addition to faster shift times, the new gearbox adds a Race Start launch-control function. It's easy enough to access. In either Sport or Sport+ mode, depress the brake and accelerator simultaneously. The digital instrument display flashes a red Race Start message, and when the revs hit 4000 rpm, release the brake and enjoy being launched back into your seat. We mean that quite literally—our passenger was leaning forward balancing a phone atop the dash to capture the moment, and the accelerative force flung him rearward into his chair, resulting in a video clip of the headliner instead. In our testing of the standard DBX, it vaulted to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and dispatched the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds at 114 mph. That doesn't sound too shabby, until you learn that those numbers trail the Audi RS Q8, the Bentley Bentayga V-8, the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S, and even the Maserati Levante Trofeo. Bragging rights count, and the more muscular DBX 707—which also benefits from a shorter 3.27:1 final-drive ratio—chops the benchmark 60-mph time to 3.1 seconds and can reach 100 mph in 7.9 seconds. It also ripped through the quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds at 119 mph. Top speed is a claimed 193 mph. In the real world—which for our drive was the island of Sardinia—the DBX 707 is simply insanely quick. You're hard-pressed to find an opportunity to fully stretch its legs for more than a few seconds at a time. It’s equipped with four-wheel drive, and it costs from £150,000. Think that’s expensive? Well, you’ll need to spend more on the DBX 707, which starts from £190,000! So it’s up on price, but it’s also up on power! With a Mercedes-AMG 4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet, coupled with a pair of turbos taken from the AMG GT Black Series, it can produce 707hp and 900Nm! When it comes to exterior design, both have upgraded over the standard variations of each car. With the Aston, you’ll find a more aggressive front end coupled with a bigger grille, along with sporty side skirts and a large diffuser around the back. With the Porsche, you’ve got a carbon fibre roof, bigger air intakes up front, and a carbon fibre diffuser which comes as standard. On the inside, both cars are just oozing quality. In the Porsche, you’ll find Alcantara throughout the cabin, a pair of super comfortable sports seats up front, and a well-laid-out dashboard and centre console. The DBX 707 is certainly more colourful than the Porsche and the entire cabin is covered in soft-touch materials, but the button layout and design isn’t as clean as in the Turbo GT. So which would you choose - the Porsche or the Aston? If you’re undecided, then you know what you need to do - stick with Mat for this all-new group test review! SUV Sports Car? Welcome back to RBR, and to the The SUV with the soul of a sports car! Built in new St Athans plant in Wales, it’s a crunch moment car for Aston. The last of Andy Palmer’s second century legacy before the coming of AMG Legend Tobias Moers as the new CEO. Car industry fact: SUV’s make money, and this DBX has been planned since 2015. Looking at the Cayenne’s success it’s easy to see why: they make money in the right countries, with the biggest demographics. So for a company wanting to boost their customer reach and build cash reserves, this DBX is a big deal. As we saw, the first Concept DBX was an utterly bizarre one. Thankfully, they settled on a much more mainstream shape, something a supercar customer can use as their go to school vehicle. It’s an odd one though: it’s priced bang smack in Urus and Bentayga territory, starting at 158k, you’ll get to 170/180 with some ease on a configurator, probably a faster than the DBX could reach 180MPH. But the Urus has major performance advantages with 650 hp, 0-60 in close to 3 seconds… vs the DBX’s 540 and 4.3. Heck, a fully spec’d RSQ8 has 600 BHP and 3.8 seconds for 126k! So what can the Aston bring to the table to differentiate itself in this fiercely competitive market, it ways that it’s siblings in the DB11 and Vantage seem to do with ease? We will explore this on the drive. Many assume that since the engine and gearbox are AMG sourced, alongside the infotainment and some switch gear means that the whole car must be Mercedes sourced. E63 clad mules didn’t help that case but that is simply not the case. Just like the DB11, this is a whole New SUV platform, clean sheet for the SUV. Bonded aluminium just like the sports car Aston platform. Being their own platform has given them freedoms in terms of chassis, design and technologies. The shape of the car, it is shorter in height than the rivals, and sometimes seems the size of a car the class below. This is in part due to the smooth edges and short overhangs. The Vantage similarities no doubt help. Yet despite this, it’s class leader in interior space. Theres also a flat floor with no sill to climb over, making it the easiest in class to get in and out of. In terms of internals, of course it AMG V8 as seen used in Vantage and DB11 but it only has 542BHP and 700NM, and a slowish 4.3second 0-60. The 9 speed is apparently also Mercedes based, but of course with Aston’s own software and driving modes as we will discover. It has Triple volume air suspension linked to a 48v anti roll system - 1400nm of anti roll force per axle. And the ride height is fully adjustable - All wheel drive system has the eDiff limited slip in the rear, torque split fully variable. SO all of this, very typical of today’s performance SUVs. On paper at least, we will have to see how the custom platform fairs when we drive it! This is one of my all time favourite car colors. Absolutely stunning in real life. Thanks: MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE CARS 🤍 🤍 Tested: 2023 Aston Martin DBX 707 Is More Than Just a Pretty Face The 707 treatment brings a heady 3.1-second 60-mph time to Aston Martin's fetching DBX SUV. Sports-car companies creating SUVs is a phenomenon enthusiasts have watched with varying degrees of horror, excitement, and acceptance ever since the Porsche Cayenne debuted. With its DBX, Aston Martin arguably—and, well, surprisingly—has been the most successful in transferring the design language of its sports cars onto an SUV shape. The brand, however, has also come to realize that the waning days of internal combustion are no time to hold back when it comes to horsepower. So, whereas the standard DBX develops 542 horsepower from its AMG-supplied twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, the new DBX 707 model produces 697 horsepower—or 707 PS in the more flattering European measure. The design of this high-test version, of course, has been tweaked, mostly for reasons of function. The 707's grille opening is 27 percent larger to permit greater airflow for engine cooling. Flanking it are revised air intakes bisected by horizontal DRL lighting elements. There are several new aero bits: a carbon-fiber front splitter, revised skirts along the rocker panels, air deflectors ahead of the front and rear wheel openings, an air outlet cut into the rear quarter panels, an extended rear diffuser, and a longer rear spoiler. The mirror caps and side strakes can be done in carbon fiber or black to match the window surrounds, hood vents, and roof rails. Fortunately, none of these addenda detract too much from the organic shape of the DBX—although we're not particular fans of the rear air outlets and that protruding diffuser. Still, this is a long way from Mansory-style aftermarket overkill. The uprated power output comes from the same 4.0-liter V-8 as the standard DBX. Of course, the engine isn't exactly the same: There are new turbochargers, redesigned induction and exhaust systems, and a reprogrammed engine control unit to manage it all. The massaging was done at Aston Martin under head of powertrain engineering Ralph Illenberger, who, having come from AMG, knows this engine well. To cope with the extra output, the standard DBX's nine-speed automatic transmission is replaced by an AMG-sourced version that features a wet clutch pack in place of a torque converter. HIGHS: Hold-on-tight acceleration, leather-lined cabin is an olfactory delight, sleek looks show up other SUVs. In addition to faster shift times, the new gearbox adds a Race Start launch-control function. It's easy enough to access. In either Sport or Sport+ mode, depress the brake and accelerator simultaneously. The digital instrument display flashes a red Race Start message, and when the revs hit 4000 rpm, release the brake and enjoy being launched back into your seat. We mean that quite literally—our passenger was leaning forward balancing a phone atop the dash to capture the moment, and the accelerative force flung him rearward into his chair, resulting in a video clip of the headliner instead. In our testing of the standard DBX, it vaulted to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and dispatched the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds at 114 mph. That doesn't sound too shabby, until you learn that those numbers trail the Audi RS Q8, the Bentley Bentayga V-8, the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S, and even the Maserati Levante Trofeo. Bragging rights count, and the more muscular DBX 707—which also benefits from a shorter 3.27:1 final-drive ratio—chops the benchmark 60-mph time to 3.1 seconds and can reach 100 mph in 7.9 seconds. It also ripped through the quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds at 119 mph. Top speed is a claimed 193 mph. In the real world—which for our drive was the island of Sardinia—the DBX 707 is simply insanely quick. You're hard-pressed to find an opportunity to fully stretch its legs for more than a few seconds at a time. When you do, the accelerative thrust is so intense that even the fractional pause in power during the transmission's extra-quick upshifts creates a head-bobbing moment as the DBX 707 rockets ahead.
