The Ford Ranger is one of the most popular pickup trucks in the UK. For 2023, Ford has redesigned the Ranger to give it a bolder appearance, as well as updating the interior and infotainment options. Under the skin, the 2023 Ranger (which has been jointly developed with the latest VW Amarok) sits on the same mechanicals as its predecessor, which was first launched in 2011. So, as Rebecca Jackson discovers in this CarGurus UK review, it's not hugely different as far as the driving experience goes. However, there are enough improvement elsewhere to keep it on the shortlist of any pickup buyer. In this video, Rebecca tests what is expected to be the bestselling powertrain in the UK, namely the 205 horsepower 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine matched with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Configured in a double cab layout and finished in plush Wildtrak trim, this particular Ranger features heated leather seats with contrasting stitching, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone climate control. There's also a 12-inch portrait infotainment system complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Throw in the huge 1.5-metre long loadbed, and this is the kind of pickup that could almost replace that family SUV car. Oh, how times have changed, so much so that the 2024 Ford Ranger has added another string to its bow in the form of a new non-Raptor flagship, the aptly named and luxury-focused Platinum. The Platinum nameplate may be new to the Ranger, but it's not new to Ford, which continues to use it on the mechanically related Everest large SUV to this day. Needless to say, the high-end similarities between the new Ranger Platinum and the established Everest Platinum are numerous. But does Australia really need a premium alternative to the Toyota HiLux?
