Voters in Finland are casting their ballots to elect members of a new parliament in what opinion polls suggest will be tough competition for Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s Social Democrats Party (SDP) to keep its post. More than 2,400 candidates from 22 parties are vying for the 200 seats in the Nordic country’s parliament, the Eduskunta, on Sunday. Polling stations opened at 9am (06:00 GMT). Sanna Marin took power in 2019, becoming the world's youngest leader. But she's not popular with conservatives, who say she's been reckless with public spending. Three parties are neck-and-neck in the polls. Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands reports. Various of voters casting vote 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Mariana Sepanen, university professor: “I think usually the party which has been in charge and which has the prime minister - has been part of the party - usually loses in the election. And I think the criticism has been very hard. But I think she has a lot of support anyway. But as far as I’ve understood, abroad her (PM Sanna Marin) reputation is very positive, even more positive than in Finland in general.” 6. Various of voters at polling station 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Evelina Makela, teacher: ”I know Sanna Marin (Incumbent prime minister) is very popular, and she has done great, and most of the Finns also think that she did an amazing job with the coronavirus. But maybe we have to look at the new crisis that we have, and some of us still believe that she does a very good job, but other people want something new, apparently.” 8. Close of Finnish flag STORYLINE: Polling stations opened Sunday in Finland, where three parties were expected to be in a tight race as Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s Social Democrats fight to secure a second term running the government. Over 2,400 candidates from 22 parties were vying for the 200 seats in the Nordic country's parliament, the Eduskunta. Marin, who at age 37 is one of Europe’s youngest leaders, has received praise for her Cabinet’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and for her prominent role, along with President Sauli Niinistö, in advocating for Finland’s successful application to join NATO. ”I know Sanna Marin is very popular, and she has done great, and most of the Finns also think that she did an amazing job with the Coronavirus”, Evelina Makela told AP after casting her vote. Recent polls indicated each of the three parties could take about 20% of the vote. If that happens, no party would be in position to form a government alone; whichever one wins the most votes is expected to begin talks in the next few days on forming a governing coalition. Finland, which is expected to join NATO in the coming weeks, is a European Union member with a population of 5.5 million. Polls close at 1700 GMT (12 p.m. Eastern. It's for or against internationalism, for or against Europe, it's either liberal or conservative, it's either open or closed up. So you either look forward or you look backward. And that's pretty much the choice today. We traditionally have three big parties, now it looks like we're going to have four, so it's going to be an interesting election night." 4. Close, cutaway of cameraman 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Alexander Stubb, Foreign Minister of Finland: "On a global scale it's pretty good, that we only have 16 percent - if that is the final result - of people who are really upset about internationalism." 6. Mid of Stubb talking to journalist 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Alexander Stubb, Foreign Minister of Finland: "We started it easy this morning, did a little bit of tweeting, then I went and did a 17.4 k run, very happy with the result, I came in at 1:12:44 so that's 4:10 per k, heartbeat at 1/68 so I'm all pumped for the evening." 8. Mid of Stubb 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Alexander Stubb, Foreign Minister of Finland: "The winner tomorrow? I don't know. I don't want to predict, I'm a little bit superstitious, I hope that we will make history. We've never been the biggest party yet, my party chairman has worked very hard for seven years, he's a young guy, 39 years old, he's been a fantastic finance minister and I hope that we get the big reward tonight but I can't predict it." 10. Wide of Stubb addressing journalists 11. Various of Finnish State Broadcaster YLE's election night broadcast being shown on a big screen STORYLINE: As polls closed in Finland's general election on Sunday, Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb said voters faced clear-cut choices. "It's for or against internationalism, for or against Europe, it's either liberal or conservative, it's either open or closed up. So you either look forward or you look backward," said Stubbs, speaking ahead of the announcement of the first exit polls. Early results showed the conservatives in the lead and big gains for a nationalist party that wants to block bailouts for Portugal and other cash-strapped eurozone members. With about one-third of votes counted, the conservative National Coalition Party - part of the current centre-right government - was in first place with 20 percent, just ahead of the opposition Social Democrats. The nationalist True Finns, who don't see why Finland should rescue Europe's debt-ridden economies, were in third place with almost 19 percent. The Social Democrats aren't against eurozone bailouts, but have called for changes to how they are funded. Full official results were expected later on Sunday. The first exit polls appeared on state broadcaster YLE at 8 pm local time (1700 GMT) and showed the Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) leading with 20.2 percent of the vote; Prime Minister Mari Kivieniemi's SDP party in second place with 19.4 percent of the vote and the True Finn party currently third with 18.7 percent of the vote. The rise of the anti-immigration and eurosceptic True Finns has rattled nerves in the 17-member eurozone where bailout funds require unanimous approval. However Stubb, a Kokoomus minister, dismissed fears that his party would have to listen to disaffected anti-Europe voters. "I'm all pumped for the evening," he said. Weary Bulgarians Go To Polls For Fifth Time In Two Years | Bulgarian Parliamentary Election In Sofia Bulgarians vote in their fifth parliamentary election in two years on Sunday (April 2) amid rising resentment towards political elites who many see as unwilling to tackle graft and economic reforms. Opinion polls show the ballot will likely leave Bulgaria short of a functioning parliamentary majority again, putting in question its ambitions to join the euro zone in the near term and effectively use European Union COVID recovery aid. #bulgaria #elections #englishnews n18oc_world

Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing allies secured an early lead in Israel's latest national election, according to exit polls. The 73-year-old said he would set up a "stable national government," after Israel's fifth election since 2019. Exit polls showed a surge in support for the ultranationalist Religious Zionism party, whose top candidate is Itamar Ben-Gvir. Projections put Ben-Gvir's far-right party in third place. Centrist caretaker Prime Minister Yair Lapid's bloc was projected to come in at a close second. A final result is expected later this week. Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson are meeting in Stockholm on Wednesday to discuss regional security matters in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. At a joint press conference after, Marin said she could not give a timetable for a decision on whether Finland would join NATO but nonetheless said the decision was weeks, not months away. Andersson said Sweden would not rush a decision, but the country's assessment of the security situation would be thorough but expedient. All 30 members of NATO would need to ratify the country's membership which could take anywhere from a few months to a year. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said the door for membership remains open. While many analysts expect a joint application from the two countries, the leaders of both countries stress Finland and Sweden could ultimately reach separate conclusions on whether to join the military alliance.
