Known as the 'Spring City' for its equable climate, it remains a very pleasant place to kick back for a few days. For visitors who haven't succumbed to the laid-back attitude of the place, there are plenty of temples and national parks nearby to keep you busy during the day and a fair few craft breweries and cool bars to hold your attention at night. Of course, like other Chinese cities, the face of Kunming is constantly changing and most old neighborhoods have been torn down to make way for shopping malls and towering new residential complexes. Traffic jams, unknown even a few years ago, are now a common occurrence. Yet the essentially easy-going nature of Kunming is, thankfully, still the same. The China–Vientiane railway is a 414-kilometre 1,435 mm standard gauge electrified railway in Laos, running between the capital Vientiane and the town on the border with Yunnan, China. Kunming is a national historical and cultural city in China. Humans lived and multiplied around Dianchi Lake as early as 30,000 years ago; Dian Kingdom was established in 278 BC and its capital was established here; Nanzhao Kingdom built and extended the East City in 765, marking the beginning of Kunming’s construction ; At the end of the Ming Dynasty, the Yongli regime of the Nanming Dynasty established its capital in Kunming. Kunming has a monsoon climate in the northern subtropical low-latitude plateau mountain. Yes, Kunming is as awesome as it sounds. A city in CHINA with little/no pollution, mega chill vibes, and because it's neither too hot in summer or too cold in winter, there are always flowers around! So if you're planning some travels in Yunnan, I'd really suggest at least 2 days here to soak up all those Kunming happy vibes! As I emerged from Kunming airport under a dazzling sky and rows of elegant palms, two things struck me. Firstly, that I was wearing too many clothes. Secondly, a distinct, earthy aroma hanging in the air, with a subtle suggestion of tropical fecundity. A world away from northerly Beijing's desiccated drabness, this city - capital of China's land "south of the clouds" - promised warmth, vitality, and more than a touch of the exotic. I was ready to explore. Widely hailed as the "City of Eternal Spring", Kunming is a sun-kissed metropolis, nestling at 2000 meters among lakes and terraced hillsides of tea and tobacco. "This city has the best weather in Yunnan and all of China," said my taxi driver with good-natured pride, as we drove down boulevards toward my well-appointed hotel. "It has the freshest air and the most beautiful girls. Some people say Chengdu girls are more beautiful, but I think they're wrong." I assured him I'd conduct my own careful survey. Itinerant Italian Marco Polo once described Kunming as a "very great and noble city". Staring out of my taxi window over seven centuries later, I couldn't help but agree. Shimmering towers of glass and concrete overshadowed side streets edged with magnolia, while carefree couples strolled along sidewalks decorated with luxuriant camellia blooms. With roadside verges chipping in with profusions of scarlet azalea, February in Kunming was starting to seem more like summer. -⭐⭐ Kunming, the modern capital city and transportation hub of China’s southern Yunnan province, has a large student population and a temperate year-round climate. Kunming, the capital and largest city of Yunnan Province, is the political, cultural, economic, and transportation center of Yunnan Province. Kunming is well-connected with Southeast Asia and is a pivotal destination on the south China tourist loop (Chengdu–Kunming–Guilin–HK). Known as 'the City of Eternal Spring' and 'the City of Flowers', visitors come in great numbers to enjoy the spring-like climate and spectacular scenery. Kunming’s Location Kunming is located on the elevated and mountainous Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in sub-tropical south China. Exploring Kunming's Old Street - where history meets modernity The Old Street is the only traditional street block in Kunming which retains the layout from the Ming and Qing dynasty. The block is home to plenty of historical relics and protected buildings. The main parts of the quarter are Wenming, Guanghua, Qianwang, and Jingxing Streets. Entering the Old Street from Zhengyi Square, the flagstones beneath ones feet are rinsed clean by rainwater. There is a modern shopping centre building with glass walls on the right side, and historical architecture to the left. A new era and the past are fused simply within metres of one another. This Day 4 of this 4-part video Chinese food tour of Yunnan. I paid for this tour, but they did a great job and I would recommend them. Kunming, Yunnan, China - Kunming is the capital and largest city in Yunnan province China. So I was excited to explore the local market in Kunming and eat as much street food as possible! Here are all the Chinese street food dishes we ate throughout the market: Rice pudding - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was slightly fermented, and sweet, like a rice alcohol pudding. It was pretty good, but quite sweet, so I couldn’t eat that much of it. Dumpling - 1 RMB ($0.15) - I saw these dumplings sizzling and hissing and there was no way I could walk by without trying one. Stuffed inside were leek and egg. They were a little on the oily side, but delicious. Whole duck - 20 RMB ($3.03) - Yunnan is famous for roast duck, and there’s a version that’s comparable even to Beijing style. Style I was excited to find a stall that at the market that specialize in Yunnanese roast duck. It was delicious and the owners were very friendly as well. Pickled pears - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was an interesting snack, and supposed to be very healthy and good for digestion. Drink - 2 RMB ($0.30) - This drink was incredible sweet, but refreshing. Tofu Noodles - 5.5 RMB ($0.83) - Another extremely popular Chinese street food snack at the market was tofu noodles - I’ve had tofu and noodles, but not really mixed before. It was a little plain and starchy, but from all the sauces, it was taty. Rice balls - 5 RMB ($0.76) - We also tried sesame rice balls which were delicious. Jacuzzi braised ½ chicken - 15 RMB ($2.27) - This was one of the highlights of the market for me, mainly because the owner was so friendly and his giant jacuzzi of boiling chickens was amazing to see! The chicken was a little bony, but flavorful. Yellow soybean porridge - 3.5 RMB ($0.53) - As we were leaving the market, we stopped for one last bowl of soybean porridge to eat with youtiau, Chinese donuts. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did, but it was delicious. It was very warming and hearty. Finally to complete this Chinese street food tour in Kunming, Jerry and I, along with his family ate Chinese Yunnanese bbq. It was tasty and a great way to end this amazing day of street food. The Stone Forest of Shilin is an area of stunning limestone (karst) formations close to Kunming, Yunnan, China. UNESCO has inscribed the Stone Forest on the World Heritage List as part of the South China Karst: "South China Karst is one of the world’s most spectacular examples of humid tropical to subtropical karst landscapes. The Shilin Karst component is in Yunnan province and contains stone forests with sculpted pinnacle columns and is considered the world reference site for pinnacle karst." One of the many perks of living in Hong Kong is that Mainland China is super accessible. And with its vast and convenient network of trains, it is super easy to travel to different cities for a few days or even do a long weekend trip. During my easter weekend (and I know it’s been a long time since I’ve posted this), I went to Kunming and Lijiang, which is the province of Yunnan, the southwestern part of China. I’ve always wanted to go here because I was intrigued of the diverse culture and the delicious food there. In Kunming, I visited the Yunnan ethnic village and ate cross bridge noodles, and in Lijiang, I was upgraded to a rooftop suite, got surprised by its vibrant nightlife and explored the natural scenery of the jade snow mountain and the blue moon valley. Kunming, abbreviated as Kun, is the capital of Yunnan Province of the People's Republic of China, the only mega-city in Yunnan and the fourth largest city in Western China. It is the political, economic, cultural, scientific and technological center and transportation hub of Western China. It is the gateway to China's opening to Southeast Asia and South Asia. It is also a famous historical and cultural city and an excellent tourist city in China. Kunming is known as the "Spring City" because it has a typical temperate climate with no summer heat, no winter cold and a pleasant climate. Kunming is a famous national historical and cultural city with the World Natural Heritage Yunnan Stone Forest, the national scenic Dianchi Lake, the Sedan Chair National Nature Reserve, the Xishan National Forest Park, and many key national cultural relics protection units. In the traditional urban axis of Kunming - Sanshichi Street and Zhengyi Road, there are Golden Horse and Chicken Square and the recent park. Not far to the south of the Golden Horse and Pigeon Square is the tall East-West Temple Pagoda, a relic of the Southern imperial empire and one of the oldest buildings in Kunming. Since 1985, tens of thousands of red-billed gulls flying from the north have been wintering at Cuihu Lake from December to March, making it one of Kunming's most popular sights. A number of five-star hotels, bars, teahouses and western restaurants are gathered in the vicinity. Not far away is the Yuantong Mountain Zoo. In the center of the city, there is a small alley called Culture Lane on Construction Road. It is a gathering place for young people. There are many famous monuments around Dianchi, including Da Guan Lou, which is famous for the 180-character couplet written by Sun Hu Weng, a famous scholar of the Qing Dynasty. Kunming 2022: China's Fantastic Spring City | The Hike to Dragon Gate Hey guys 'n' gals! We are in Kunming, Yunnan Province - also known as China's 'Spring City', due to its year-round agreeable climate - for our summer holiday, and as ever we are looking for a fantastic, action-packed family adventure! We will start our holiday in Kunming, before leisurely making our way down to Xishuanbanna - via Pu'er - by train, showing you our home-videos along the way. In this installment, we take a trip to Kunming's Xishan Mountain, also known as West Hill. West Hill is a forest park, a beautiful place with awesome views of the city. You can overlook the Dian Lake, take a surprise white-water rafting slide down the mountain, have a great lunch, try some interesting local snacks and visit some fantastic temples along the way. In summary, it's the perfect place for a family day out. To our surprise, the 'old school cable cars' - aka chairlifts - are still used on Xishan Mountain, and we take it to all the way to the top, where our search for Dragon Gate truly begins. Walking along the many little paths, we finally made it to the beautiful mountain-side location where Dragon Gate is located.
