In this video, I setup a Raspberry Pi 2 as a thin client for virtual machines running in Proxmox Virtual Environment using entirely open-source software and protocols. The method I use relies on the SPICE protocol, as opposed to VNC, RDP (Windows Remote Desktop), or any proprietary solutions. By using the SPICE display driver in Proxmox, we get a more feature-rich experience than VNC, and the session is handled entirely by the hypervisor, so it isn't dependent on the operating system. Basic functionality should work without installing any drivers in the guest. Combining this with a Raspberry Pi, and I have the building blocks for a low cost virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution. Read the blog post on my website for all of the scripts and commands used to set this up: 🤍 Make sure you check out my Thin Client and VDI playlist for the next videos in this series! 🤍 I tested with both Ubuntu and Windows 10 guests, and performance was acceptable for everything but video playback. Windows also struggled during desktop animations, but without any graphical acceleration the Windows UI isn't smooth on higher powered SPICE clients either. With Ubuntu guests and the Pi 2, performance is perfectly adequate for basic desktop tasks including web browsing, text editing, etc, but not low latency or smooth video. With Windows guests, full screen animation such as the login screen can cause noticeable stuttering of the thin client, but many programs are still usable. This could be improved with a newer Pi, but I don't have any Pi 4's to spare and they have been out of stock for months at this point. I'll certainly revisit this topic once I can get a spare Pi 4. I've taken steps to reduce the usability of the Raspberry Pi outside of its role as a thin client by running without a desktop environment and using kiosk mode of remote-viewer, but it shouldn't be considered totally secure. It's still possible for a user of the thin client to get to the Pi user's shell, so you should take steps to further secure the installation if you're using this in a scenario where the users are completely untrusted. SPICE also supports other features I didn't examine in this video but may in the future, including audio and USB passthrough. It should also work (without automatic display resizing or mode switching) without guest driver support, but I found that Windows 10 came with an incomplete driver and I needed to load the proper SPICE driver for the display/keyboard/mouse to work at all. I apologize for the camera's exposure during the Video Streaming segment, the camera started to struggle as the sun went down. Continuing my saga to build the ultimate open source thin client and VDI infrastructure, I have a solution for logging in to multiple VMs from a single client system. You can now choose which VM to log in to, allow certain VMs to be password protected, and also allow local system users as well as thin client sessions from the same login screen. Once you 'log in', it connects you directly to a thin client session to a VM running in Proxmox. All of the commands and instructions are written out in the blog post below so you can copy/paste as required. While I focused on the Raspberry Pi for this, I understand that they are really hard to find right now, so I've included a Debian guide and modifications to the commands for Debian in the same blog post, so you can run this on non-Pi hardware too. So you want to turn your one or two Proxmox nodes into a small Proxmox cluster? What do you need to know about quorum, especially as it pertains to really small clusters of 2 and 3 nodes? In this video, I go over the different ways to stabilize a 2-node cluster for high availability, the storage requirements for high available VMs, using a Raspberry Pi as a QDevice, and if you even need one. I also talk about how a QDevice might not help you as much as you think in a 3 node cluster. I also cover installing a the QDevice daemon on a Raspberry Pi, and using a very small Proxmox node to maintain quorum without allowing it to be part of the high available VM pool. I just don’t have much experience with it, but I will try it out later, maybe even before I set this up in my home! - PFSense can do basically all of those things with other packages; why not do that? Honestly, I wasn’t aware of all the packages available, especially the experimental ones. But I also like the flexibility of containers and VMs. I can easily swap to OPNSense later without having to set everything else up again if I want for example. Also, software preference is a thing. It doesn’t mean I think running everything bare metal is a bad idea. Quite the opposite! I built a virtualized router similar to this a while back, but now I'm going to take it to the next level and build my "ULTIMATE" router. In this video we show you how to setup a qdevice for a Proxmox cluster A cluster needs at least 2 voting servers for activity and so you should have a minimum of 3 servers in the cluster in case one becomes unavailable If you only had two nodes and one failed, you will find certain things don't work including being able to login to the cluster Proxmox allows you to setup what is known as a qdevice and add this into your cluster instead of a third node Basically it just provides the extra vote needed The qdevice needs to run Debian and this could be something as simple as a Raspberry Pi or a VM on a NAS for instance This is very useful if you only need 2 nodes in a Proxmox cluster to provide redundancy for your VMs, because it can save wasting money on a third server which would likely do nothing more than just vote Hardware Suggestions: Raspberry Pi 4 Kit 🤍 NOTE: I am part of the Amazon affiliate program and may earn commission through Amazon website links if used. In this video, I explore USB Redirection with the SPICE based Thin Client I setup on a Raspberry Pi, connected to a Proxmox hypervisor. I explore the options in remote-viewer for USB redirection, device filters, and test several classes of USB device including flash drives / mass storage, USB serial, and cameras. Not all of them work perfectly due to bandwidth limits of the thin client setup, but all devices were correctly redirected and detected by the guest, and most worked fine. For my new trick, I'm progressing the Raspberry Pi (or Debian) + Proxmox Thin Client forward using a new Python tool written by a viewer of mine. Called PVE-VDIClient, it looks like a login screen but it authenticates via the Proxmox API, queries a list of all VMs the user has access to, and lets you choose which to launch into. Now, you can provision VMs per user and let any user in the system login to any of their VMs from any thin client in your system, without having to individually hardcode VM IDs on the thin client. I know the Raspberry Pi and Debian are both split in popularity with thin clients (probably because Raspberry Pi's are basically impossible to buy right now), so for this video I again wrote instructions for both Pi OS and Debian in my blog post, but this time I chose to follow the Debian version on video. The result is the same for both OSes, a login screen which authenticates back to Proxmox, using the SPICE protocol for remote access, and SOUND WORKS!
