An iffy forecast dampened any enthusiasm for going further afield so having a good hill like Blackstone Edge close to home, I set off from the house to spend the night up there. A stunning winter wild camping in the heart of the Scafell range in the Lake District. We summited Scafell before dropping down to avoid the 35mph summit winds and -8degC windchill. I took my Hilleberg Allak 2 and my make Simon in his Hilleberg Soulo RL. A 12 mile (19km) walk with 2950ft (900m) of ascent. I'm not sure if this is classed as a wild camp but following much umming and ahhing, after taking in a couple of new Wainwrights, I decided to spend the night in Lingy Hut bothy, rather than use the tent. This was my first overnighter in a bothy and it was absolutely freezing.

Wild Camping on a famous HAUNTED hill in England in the Nordisk Halland 2LW We had to a very famous haunted hill in England for my Son's first ever wild camp. An arduous ascent in the still heat of the day, but a very atmospheric and haunted location which was home to the infamous Pendle Witches with the associated history drawing crowds from all over the world to visit this fascinating location. We hiked a lesser trodden path to the summit, taking in the expansive views before topping out at the summit and finding a place to pitch the tents. Tom did very well carrying his own (adult size) 50 litre pack and didn't complain once. We took in the views and cooked our evening meals as the sun set across the Forest of Bowland area, with stunning views across to the Yorkshire Dales. Our friends Ant and Charlie joined us for what was a very memorable camp, with spooky tales told as dusk set in and local podcast legends listened to eagerly, including big cats sightings around Winter Hill. As the night drew in, the hill took on a very different feel, with the younger members of the camp not wanting to venture too far from the tents. I had an excellent sleep on my new mat which is the Thermarest NeoAir X-Lite NXT MAX - which is thicker, warmer and quieter than the already brilliant previous version. The extra surface area of the rectangular 'MAX' version is luxurious, with very little weight and bulk penalty over the previous version but plenty of noticeable improvements - a full comparison video is coming very soon. Some stunning aerial views from the drone along with Tom's wild camping first made this a camp which I will always remember. We went wild camping in the Brecon Beacons and also to take on the Pen y Fan Horseshoe. We love a backpacking challenge so we made the Pen y Fan hiking harder by taking in more than just the mountains of Big y Fan, Cribyn, Pen y Fan and Corn Du. We found a great place to wild camp just below Pen y Fan at Llyn Cwm Llwch. The weather for our wild camping uk trip was perfect. Zero wind, no rain and lots of sun. Our first days hiking covered 12 miles. I got up for the sun rise at pen y fan (Mark stayed in his backpacking tent!) and covered a further 3 miles and then on the way back to the car covered another 9 miles. We were testing out our latest camping gear including my new 2023 Terra Nova Lazer Compact AS tent, Mark's Big Agnes Copper Spur 1 tent, my Osprey Atmos 50 LT, Fire Maple Radiant camping stove and Inov-8 Roclite G400 hiking boots and lots of other smaller backpacking gear items. I love wild camping in Wales but usually spend my time in Snowdonia. However, wild camping in the brecon beacons was superb and there are so many places to camp up high out of the way of people and animals. We left no trace, please make sure you do the same!
